Writer visits R.L. Young
Rick Shelton is an accomplished author with two books under his belt, but more than that, he is a writing counselor. He has spent much of his time for the last 30 years in schools around Alabama and the Southeast. Recently, he was invited by R.L. Young Elementary to spend four days leading writing workshops for teachers and students. Shelton spent one day with teachers, showing them practical methods for teaching writing in their classrooms. Three days were allotted for small sessions with students from kindergarten to 6th grade, using techniques to not only improve their writing skills, but also to share the enjoyment and fun of writing. The workshop was made possible by financial backing from Callie’s Kids, the nonprofit children’s foundation that supports enrichment opportunities for children in the Talladega County area.

WELCOME, MR. SHIRAH

The 6th grade students started "LIFE SKILLS" with Mr. Shirah today.  The students are very excited about working with him every Wednesday.  He shared his life experiences and told them many stories.  He also gave every student a statement that he wants them to learn during the year. We appreciate First Family Services for providing this wonderful program .

AND THE WINNER IS...

Mrs. Nelson's students were very excited to have their door chosen for the "best door display" during red ribbon week.  They had fun making their adorable mummies.  The students will represent R.L. Young in a red balloon release this week.  This will take place at 1:00 Friday afternoon at the Board of Education.  The winner from each school will participate in the balloon release.  What FUN!!!

Writing with Rick Shelton

AUTOGRAPH TIME

MR. SHELTON EXPLAINS HIS "SHOW ME HOW" PROCESS

Rick Shelton spent three days at R.L. Young last week working with students in every grade level and one day working with the teachers.  With the help of a grant provided by Callie's Kids, we were able to have Mr. Shelton for four days. The students looked forward to hearing and working with him every day.  He taught them things that would help them in the writing process and had them very engaged every day. Thank you, Rick Shelton and Callie's Kids.
